天色还是一片墨蓝，窗外的群山像裹着厚厚的睡袍。突然，一声清脆洪亮的啼鸣穿透晨雾，把睡梦中的小树唤醒了。

The sky outside was still deep inky blue, and the distant hills were wrapped in sleepy mist. Suddenly, a bright, ringing call cut through the dawn, waking Xiao Shu up.

The sky outside was still deep inky blue, and the distant hills were wrapped in sleepy mist. Suddenly, a bright, ringing call cut through the dawn, waking Xiao Shu up.

小树趴在窗台前揉揉眼睛。木栅栏上，一只大公鸡高高昂起金红色的头冠，正挺着脖子对着泛白的天边大声叫喊。

Xiao Shu leaned against the windowsill and rubbed his eyes. Perched high on the wooden fence was a big rooster with a golden-red comb, proudly stretching its neck toward the pale horizon.

小树穿上背带裤跑下楼。爷爷正在院子里给花浇水。小树好奇地问：“爷爷，大公鸡是在把太阳公公叫醒，还是在叫我们起床呢？”

Xiao Shu slipped into his overalls and ran downstairs. Grandpa was watering flowers in the courtyard. Xiao Shu asked, "Grandpa, is the rooster waking up the sun, or is he calling us to wake up?"

爷爷笑着蹲下身：“古老故事里总说公鸡唤出红日，但太阳升起是因为地球自己不停转动。公鸡可不是专门给人类当小闹钟的呀！”

Grandpa knelt down with a warm smile: "Old tales say roosters call up the sunrise, but the sun rises because Earth keeps spinning. Roosters don't crow just to wake humans up!"

爷爷领着小树来到鸡舍旁：“你看，天光才刚透出一点点，大公鸡怎么就知道该打鸣了呢？其实，它的脑子里藏着秘密呢。”

Grandpa led Xiao Shu toward the chicken coop. "Look, the dawn has only barely started. How does the rooster know it is morning? It actually holds a secret inside its brain."

每只动物身体里都有一套看不见的生物节律，就像一台准时的小闹钟。到了夜里小树会犯困，到了黎明，公鸡的生物钟就提醒它行动。

Every animal carries an invisible rhythm inside its body, just like a tiny internal clock. Xiao Shu grows sleepy at night, and the rooster's inner clock tells it dawn has arrived.

科学家观察发现，在持续的微弱光照下，公鸡仍会按接近一天的节律打鸣。没有每天的明暗变化，它的时间可能慢慢偏移，说明身体里确实有自己的节拍。

Scientists found that under constant dim light, roosters still crow with a rhythm close to a day. Without daily light changes, the timing can drift, showing that they have an inner rhythm.

“那阳光有什么用？”小树问。爷爷说：“每天的明暗变化像校表信号，帮助身体里的节拍跟外面的昼夜合上。生物钟可不是一只真正的钟。”

“Then what does sunlight do?” Xiao Shu asked. “Daily light and darkness help the inner rhythm match day and night,” Grandpa said. “A body clock is not a real little clock.”

大公鸡扑棱扑棱拍打翅膀，仰起头又大叫了一声。小树捂着耳朵跳起来：“天都大亮了，太阳已经老高，它怎么还在打鸣呀？”

The rooster flapped its wings briskly, stretched tall, and crowed once more. Xiao Shu covered his ears and giggled, "The sun is already high, why is he still crowing?"

爷爷说：“打鸣还是一种交流，能告诉其他公鸡：我在这里，这里有我的活动范围。它不是专门报时，所以白天也会叫。”

“Crowing is communication too,” Grandpa said. “It tells other roosters: I am here, in my territory. It is not just a time signal, so roosters crow in daylight too.”

响亮的叫声能传得比较远，让别的公鸡注意到自己。小树说：“原来这是它的声音告示牌！”爷爷点头：“不过它们还有别的叫声，各有不同用处。”

A loud crow can reach other roosters far away. “A voice announcement!” said Xiao Shu. Grandpa nodded. “And chickens use other calls for different purposes too.”

在有几只公鸡的鸡群里，社会地位也会影响谁先叫。有时地位较高的先打鸣，别的再跟着叫，并不是每只鸡都在同一刻开口。

In flocks with several roosters, social rank can affect the order. A higher-ranking bird may crow first, followed by others; they do not all start at the same moment.

“喔——喔喔！”远远的山坡上传来另一声啼叫。院里的大公鸡立刻挺胸回应。它们像是在隔空喊话：“我在这里！”“我也在！”

"Cock-a-doodle-doo!" came a faint call from across the hillside. The yard rooster immediately puffed his chest to answer back, chatting across the distance!

一阵翅膀扑动声传来，鸡群里响起几声短促的叫声。小树发现，那和长长的打鸣不一样。爷爷说：“对，鸡还会用其他声音提醒同伴注意周围。”

Wings fluttered nearby, and short calls came from the flock. They sounded different from a long crow. “Yes,” Grandpa said. “Chickens also use other sounds to alert companions.”

小树看着安静吃米的母鸡问：“母鸡也会打鸣吗？”爷爷说：“极少数母鸡身体发生变化时也能啼叫，但守卫领地和常规打鸣大多由公鸡负责。”

Xiao Shu watched the hens quietly peck at seeds. "Can hens crow too?" Grandpa said: "Very rarely, if their hormones shift, but daily territory crowing belongs to roosters."

奶奶端着一盘热气腾腾的玉米饼走来。小树学着大公鸡的样子，挺起胸脯张开双臂：“喔喔喔，小树的肚子里也响起了早餐小闹钟！”

Grandma arrived carrying a plate of steaming corn cakes. Xiao Shu puffed out his chest, flapped his elbows like wings, and crowed, "Cock-a-doodle-doo! My belly clock says breakfast time!"

太阳慢慢滑向西山，院子披上金红色的晚霞。大公鸡带着鸡群一步一摇地回到栖架上。生物钟告诉它们：白昼结束了，该好好睡觉啦。

The sun dipped toward the western hills, bathing the farm in golden-orange sunset. Guided by its inner clock, the rooster led the flock onto wooden perches to rest.

夜晚又安静下来，星星在天上眨着眼睛。小树躺在床上安然入眠。他知道，明天天不亮，那位装着神奇生物钟的邻居又会准时啼鸣。

Night grew quiet again as stars twinkled across the dark sky. Xiao Shu tucked himself into bed, smiling peacefully knowing his feathered neighbor's clock would tick until dawn.

生物钟影响公鸡打鸣的时间，光照帮助校准节律；打鸣也是宣示活动范围、回应其他公鸡的一种交流。

An internal clock influences crowing times, while light helps align the rhythm. Crowing also announces territory and responds to other roosters.
