小树正坐在地毯上搭积木。厨房里，爸爸轻轻敲了敲小铜钟说：“小树，洗手吃饭啦！”隔着整间屋子，声音是怎么飞过来的呢？

Xiao Shu was building blocks on the rug. From the kitchen across the room, Dad tapped a small chime: 'Dinner time!' How did that sound travel all the way across the house?

爸爸拿出一面红色玩具小鼓，让小树摸着鼓面。小树用鼓槌轻轻一敲，“咚！”指尖麻酥酥的。爸爸说：“听，声音出生的时候，物体正在发抖呢，这叫振动。”

Dad brought out a red toy drum and asked Xiao Shu to rest a finger on it. Xiao Shu tapped the drumstick—thump! His fingertip tickled. 'Listen,' Dad said, 'whenever sound is born, things are shaking. That's called vibration.'

爸爸又拉开一根彩色橡皮筋，拨弄一下，“嗡——”橡皮筋变成了模糊的虚影。小树用手一捏，橡皮筋停下不晃了，嗡嗡声也立刻消失了！

Dad stretched a colorful rubber band and plucked it—twang! It blurred back and forth. Xiao Shu pinched it with his fingers; as soon as it stopped shaking, the hum vanished completely!

小树在鼓面上撒了几粒彩色纸屑，再次敲响小鼓。纸屑欢快地跳起舞来！爸爸提醒他：“跳动的是纸屑，这证明鼓皮在颤动，但纸屑并不是声音本身哦。”

Xiao Shu sprinkled tiny paper confetti onto the drum and hit it again. The confetti bounced like dancers! Dad gently explained: 'The bouncing paper shows the drum skin is shaking, but the paper bits aren't the sound itself.'

鼓皮猛地向外鼓起时，就把身边的空气狠狠往前推挤；鼓皮缩回来时，周围的空气又变稀疏了。看不见的空气被推挤得一挤一松，变成了波纹。

When the drum surface bulges outward, it shoves the surrounding air forward. When it snaps back, the air spreads out. Invisible air gets squeezed and stretched, forming invisible ripples.

爸爸排好骨牌，推倒第一块，变化一路传到末端。“这只是传递的比方。”爸爸说，“空气微粒会来回振动，可不会像骨牌一样倒下就不动了。”

Dad tipped a row of dominoes. “This is just a model of passing something along,” he said. “Air particles move back and forth; they do not fall over and stay down like tiles.”

小树懂了：“所以不是鼓旁边的空气一路飞进我耳朵，而是空气像排队拍肩膀一样，把推挤的能量送过来了！”爸爸笑着摸了摸他的头。

'So the air beside the drum doesn't fly into my ear!' Xiao Shu realized. 'It's like a line of kids gently tapping each other's shoulders, passing the push along!' Dad smiled and ruffled his hair.

小树摸摸自己的耳朵。耳郭就像两只小喇叭，聚拢身旁空气送来的微小推挤，把这些能量顺着弯弯的耳道滑梯一直送往里面。

Xiao Shu touched his ears. His outer ears shaped like little cups gathered the gentle air nudges and guided them deep down the curving ear canal.

耳道尽头，藏着一张极薄极软的薄膜，叫做“鼓膜”。空气的波纹撞在上面，鼓膜也跟着轻轻晃动起来，就像耳朵里藏着一面感应小鼓！

Deep at the end of the ear canal lies a delicate, paper-thin membrane called the eardrum. When air ripples tap it, the eardrum trembles in sync, like a secret drum inside the ear!

鼓膜后面有三块很小的听小骨，把振动传向内耳。耳蜗里的感受细胞把振动变成神经信号，大脑收到信号，才认出了爸爸的声音。

Three tiny bones behind the eardrum carry vibrations into the inner ear. Sensory cells in the cochlea turn them into nerve signals, and the brain recognizes Dad’s voice.

爷爷坐在书桌旁，招呼小树：“快来，把耳朵贴在木桌上。”爷爷在桌子另一头轻轻用指甲划了一下，小树惊呼：“哇，声音好响亮、好清脆呀！”

Grandpa, wearing his light blue shirt and brown trousers, called Xiao Shu to the wooden desk. 'Press your ear flat on the wood.' Grandpa scratched the far end softly. Xiao Shu gasped, 'Wow, it's so loud and crisp!'

爷爷说：“声音也能靠固体传递振动。在木头、钢铁等材料里，通常比在空气里传播得快。材料的弹性和密度，都会影响速度。”

“Solids carry vibrations too,” said Grandpa. “Sound usually travels faster through wood and steel than air. A material’s stiffness and density both affect the speed.”

奶奶找来两个纸杯和一根长长的棉线，做成了土电话。奶奶走到走廊另一头，拉直细线轻轻说话。声音顺着紧绷的棉线，清晰地钻进了小树的杯子里！

Grandma made a string telephone with two paper cups and a taut cotton string. She walked to the end of the hallway and whispered softly. The sound traveled along the tight string straight into Xiao Shu's cup!

爸爸指着鲸鱼的图画说：“液体也能传声。鲸鱼在水里发出的声音，可以传给远处的同伴。声音并不只会走空气这条路。”

Dad pointed to a picture of a whale. “Liquids carry sound too. Whale calls can reach distant companions through water. Air is not sound’s only pathway.”

小树举起太空人玩具。爸爸说：“声音需要物质来传递。接近真空的太空不能像空气一样传声，所以宇航员用无线电通话；飞船里有空气，仍能听见声音。”

Xiao Shu held up an astronaut toy. “Sound needs matter to travel,” Dad said. “Near-vacuum space cannot carry it like air, so astronauts use radios. Inside an air-filled spacecraft, they can hear sounds.”

周末，爸爸带小树来到安全的空旷院子。面对远处大墙，小树喊了一声，稍后听见了回应。爸爸说：“声音遇到墙反射回来，这就是回声。”

At the weekend, Dad took Xiao Shu to a safe open courtyard. He called toward a distant wall and heard a reply a moment later. “The wall reflected the sound back,” Dad said. “That is an echo.”

爸爸提醒：“声音太大会伤害听力。远离鞭炮、音箱等强声源，必要时用合适的护耳用品。也不要把手指、棉签或小棒伸进耳道。”

Dad reminded him, “Very loud sounds can harm hearing. Stay away from fireworks and loudspeakers, and use suitable hearing protection when needed. Never put fingers, cotton swabs, or sticks into the ear canal.”

回到餐桌前，小树凑到爸爸耳边，温热的气流伴着极轻的振动：“爸爸，我爱你。”不需要多大声，最温柔的空气波纹，就已经稳稳落进心里啦。

Back at the dinner table, Xiao Shu leaned close to Dad's ear, letting the softest vibration carry his voice: 'Dad, I love you.' Even the gentlest ripple of air lands safely right in the heart.

声音是由物体振动产生的，它推挤身边的物质把能量像波纹一样传进耳朵，带动鼓膜振动，大脑就听到了声音。

Sound is born from vibration, passing energy forward through air and other materials until it vibrates our eardrums and reaches our brain.
