In the morning garden, Xiao Shu crouched beside a cabbage. A chubby green caterpillar was munching on a leaf. "Grandma, will it really grow wings and fly?" he asked.

Grandma gently turned over a leaf, pointing to tiny golden specks. "Look, these are eggs laid by a white butterfly. Caterpillars hatch from these tiny beginnings."

Once hatched, the baby caterpillar eats its nutritious eggshell, then munches leaves. Its main mission as a larva is to eat and store lots of energy inside its chubby body.

A caterpillar's skin doesn't stretch like ours. As it grows, the outer skin becomes too tight. It pauses, sheds the old tight skin from its head, and steps out in a looser new coat.

After several molts, the tiny caterpillar grows larger. Some of its food builds its body, and some is stored for becoming a chrysalis and then a butterfly.

"Does the caterpillar turn into a butterfly just because it really wants to fly?" Xiao Shu wondered. Grandma smiled, "No, special chemical growth signals inside its body tell it when it's time."

The mature cabbage white caterpillar stops eating and finds a firm twig. A silk pad anchors its tail, and a thin silk belt supports its body as it prepares to pupate.

Shedding its skin one last time, it reveals a smooth, firm chrysalis, not another caterpillar. Grandma noted, "Butterflies form a hard chrysalis directly, unlike silk moths that spin fluffy cocoons."

"Is it sleeping inside?" Xiao Shu asked. Inside, it's super busy! It doesn't melt into plain water; instead, like sorting building blocks, it breaks down old parts to build brand-new ones.

Some cells in the caterpillar are already prepared to form adult body parts. During the pupal stage, they grow and change as wings, antennae, and other structures develop.

Chewing mouthparts are replaced by a nectar-sipping tube. The soft abdominal prolegs disappear, while the three pairs of true legs change into the butterfly’s six legs.

After about ten days, the chrysalis turns thin and translucent. In the morning light, Xiao Shu gasps, "Grandma, look! I can see the wings with their black and white patterns inside!"

Crack! The chrysalis splits open. A damp cabbage white butterfly crawls out onto the twig. Its belly is plump, but its wings are tiny, soft, and crumpled like wet paper.

Xiao Shu worried, "Its wings are so small, how can it fly?" Grandma gently held his hand. "Don't worry, watch closely. It is doing something truly wonderful right now."

The butterfly pumps body fluid from its abdomen into the veins of its wings, just like blowing air into flat balloons. Slowly, the crumpled wings stretch, flatten, and expand.

Once its wings expand, the butterfly waits for them to dry and firm up. “Let’s watch from a distance,” Grandma said. “We must never pull its wings open.”

Two hours later, the butterfly gently flapped its wings and fluttered toward blooming flowers. Xiao Shu cheered! It uncoiled its straw-like proboscis to sip sweet nectar.

“Egg, larva, pupa, and adult are its four life stages,” Grandma said. “This is complete metamorphosis. Larvae eat leaves and grow; adults fly to find nectar and mates, starting the next generation.”

The butterfly lays tiny eggs on fresh green cabbage leaves. Soon, brand-new little caterpillars will hatch. This is nature's cycle of life, repeating again and again.

In his nature journal, Xiao Shu drew the caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly. Holding his little watering can, he waved at the flying butterfly: "Thank you, little garden magician!"

Metamorphosis is a life cycle where the caterpillar eats to store energy, and the butterfly flies to feed on nectar and lay eggs.
