The gates of Chang’an opened! After fourteen years away, Tang Seng and his four companions returned with the scriptures. People waved with joy.

The Tang emperor came down the steps to welcome his friends. Tang Seng presented the travel document, bearing marks of the lands they had crossed.

The scriptures were carefully set down: 5,048 scrolls from 35 collections. They had fulfilled their promise to bring them to the East.

The emperor asked about the journey. Tang Seng told of mountains, rivers, and his companions’ help. Bajie beamed when he heard his name.

The monks of Chang’an received the scriptures to copy and teach. Wukong watched the pages unfold: their long journey would let many others read them.

With the scriptures delivered, the Eight Vajra Guardians came to escort them back to Spirit Mountain. The people looked up as the five companions rose on clouds.

Tang Seng was honored as the Buddha of Sandalwood Merit. The vow he had made in Chang’an was fulfilled: the scriptures had reached his homeland.

Wukong became the Victorious Fighting Buddha. The monkey king who once stormed Heaven had protected his master to the end, learning responsibility along the way.

Bajie became the Altar-Cleansing Envoy. “There is a place for me too?” he asked. His hard work carrying and helping had earned recognition.

Sha Wujing became a Golden-Bodied Arhat. Quietly caring for the luggage and his friends, he had offered steady, precious protection.

The Buddha called White Dragon Horse forward and honored him as the Eightfold Heavenly Dragon Horse. He had carried the master west and the scriptures east; he was not forgotten.

At the Dragon Transformation Pool, White Dragon Horse stretched. His horse form gave way to a dragon with golden scales and silver whiskers, rising on gentle clouds.

Wukong suddenly remembered his headband. “Is it still there?” he asked. Tang Seng smiled. “Your journey is fulfilled. Feel for yourself.”

Wukong felt his forehead—the headband was gone! All five friends laughed. Eighty-one trials were complete, the scriptures had reached the East, and each companion was honored. From the stone monkey’s birth to the return with the scriptures, Journey to the West ends here.

True fulfillment is not praise, but continuing to share and practice what you have learned.
