猫头鹰局长拿出两封信：“先把它们送到收信人的手里吧。”

Postmaster Owl handed them two letters. “Let's start by delivering these.”

长颈鹿抬起头，轻轻一递，就把信送上了树屋的平台。

Giraffe lifted his head and easily passed a letter to a tree-house platform.

小老鼠走进树根下的窄道，很快把另一封信送到了洞口。

Mouse slipped along a narrow passage under the roots and soon delivered the other letter.

他们高高兴兴回邮局。第二轮，路线却换了。

They returned happily. For the next round, however, their routes changed.

长颈鹿来到低矮的树洞前，弯下脖子，还是进不去。

Giraffe reached a low tree hollow. Even bending his neck, he could not fit inside.

小老鼠站在高树下面，仰得帽子都快掉了，仍然够不到信箱。

Mouse looked up at a high mailbox until his cap nearly slipped, but he still could not reach it.

“我要是小一点就好了。”“我要是高一点就好了。”他们各自叹气。

“If only I were smaller.” “If only I were taller.” Each gave a sigh.

第二天，长颈鹿学小老鼠缩着身子，小老鼠学长颈鹿踮着脚尖。

The next day, Giraffe tried to crouch like Mouse, while Mouse tried stretching as tall as Giraffe.

两个人忙了半天，反而把邮包弄歪了。“也许我不适合当邮差。”

After all that effort, only their bags were crooked. “Maybe I'm not meant to be a carrier.”

局长没有急着回答。他拿来一封当天必须送到的信。

The postmaster did not answer right away. He brought a letter that had to arrive that day.

送信的路，要先经过高树平台，再穿过低低的树根通道。

The route led over a high tree platform and then through a low passage under the roots.

长颈鹿看看小老鼠：“高处我能送。”小老鼠抬起头：“后半程交给我！”

Giraffe looked at Mouse. “I can handle the high part.” Mouse replied, “Leave the last part to me!”

长颈鹿先把信递上平台，管理员再从另一侧的小篮子里放下来。

Giraffe passed the letter up to the platform. Its keeper lowered it on the other side in a small basket.

小老鼠接过信，沿着树根通道，一路送到山坡另一边。

Mouse took the letter through the root passage to the other side of the hill.

收信人笑着打开门：“谢谢你们，正好赶上！”

The recipient opened the door with a smile. “Thank you both. Just in time!”

回到邮局，局长按路线分好任务。他们不再比赛谁能做所有的事。

Back at the post office, Owl assigned routes to suit them. They stopped competing to do everything.

长颈鹿低下头，小老鼠举起爪，轻轻碰了一下。尺有所短，寸有所长，好搭档各有本领。

Giraffe bent down and Mouse raised a paw for a gentle greeting. Different strengths made them a good team.

本领是否合适，要看任务；认识自己，也欣赏别人的长处。

A strength depends on the task. Know your own abilities and appreciate those of others.
