Long ago, the great Taihang and Wangwu Mountains blocked the road outside Yu Gong’s home. Every trip meant a long detour.

Long ago, the great Taihang and Wangwu Mountains blocked the road outside Yu Gong’s home. Every trip meant a long detour.

“Let us move a little each day and slowly open a road,” Yu Gong told his family. Everyone agreed to help.

The next day, the family began at the foot of the mountain. The adults loosened soil and moved stones while the child carried only a light little basket.

Day after day, they carried away basket after basket of earth and small stones. A narrow path slowly appeared at the mountain’s foot.

A doubtful old neighbor saw them and asked, “The mountains are so large. How could you finish in one lifetime?”

Yu Gong smiled. “After me, my children and grandchildren can continue, but the mountains will not grow. If we keep going, we will make progress.”

Their steadfast hearts moved the Heavenly Ruler, who sent two mighty helpers to carry the mountains safely far away.

At last, a clear road stretched beyond their home. “Yu Gong moves the mountains” came to honor courage and persistence in the face of difficulty.

Even the biggest challenge can begin with one small step. With a good plan, teamwork, and persistence, change can grow little by little.
