Sign-ups for the forest concert had begun. Hearing music from the practice room, Monkey hummed along.

“I want to play the harmonica!” Monkey raised his hand. Bear gave him a short piece to learn for the group.

On the first day, Monkey practiced eagerly. Whenever he made a mistake, he laughed and tried again.

The next day his friends went kite flying. Monkey put his harmonica away. “I’ll practice when I get back.”

When he returned, he searched for missing kite string. By the time he remembered the harmonica, it was bedtime.

On the third day Monkey said, “I’ll play longer today.” But he became busy playing and forgot again.

At the weekend rehearsal, Rabbit shook her tambourine and Squirrel tapped his sticks. Monkey quickly lifted his harmonica.

After a few phrases, Monkey lost his place. The more he hurried, the more jumbled the music became.

“Let’s pause,” said Bear gently, inviting everyone to take a breath.

Monkey looked down. “I do like playing. I just keep thinking I’ll practice tomorrow.”

“Which little part is hardest?” Bear asked. Monkey pointed to the middle of the piece.

They divided the piece into three short parts. Today they would practice just the first one.

Monkey chose a regular time: after his daily snack, he would play a little before going outside.

On the first day he played slowly several times, learning where to pause and where to continue.

The next day he heard play outside. He wanted to join in, but first finished the small part he had planned.

One day he was tired and stopped after a short section. After resting, he returned to it the next day.

Rabbit came to play and heard the familiar tune. “That sounds much smoother!” Monkey beamed.

Once he knew the three sections, Monkey joined them together and practiced the tricky parts slowly.

At the next rehearsal, Monkey listened to his friends’ rhythm before gently adding his melody.

On concert day he still felt nervous. Rabbit nodded to him, and Monkey took a steady breath.

Harmonica, tambourine, and rhythm sticks blended like a lively stream flowing through the woods.

After putting his harmonica away, Monkey invited his friends to play. A little effort each day could take him a long way.

Small steps and regular practice, with time to rest, help us improve.
