Drip, drop! As An'an and Mom left the picture-book library, rain began to dance. A green taxi stopped neatly in the taxi bay, a yellow lightning bolt on its door.

Drip, drop! As An'an and Mom left the picture-book library, rain began to dance. A green taxi stopped neatly in the taxi bay, a yellow lightning bolt on its door.

“Lightning Taxi!” said An'an, using Mom's nickname for the car. Uncle Chen smiled. “A quick name doesn't mean rushing. Today I'll take you safely home.”

Mom checked the car and destination, then helped An'an in from the sidewalk side. Their folded umbrella dripped a little row of beads.

Click! An'an sat on her rear-seat booster, and Mom checked her belt. She patted her backpack. “We're ready too!”

Swish, swish! The wipers swept across the windshield. An'an moved one finger to their rhythm. Uncle Chen watched the road as it came into view.

Raindrops raced down the side window, one large and one small. Before An'an could guess the winner, the light turned red. Lightning Taxi stopped quietly behind the line.

“Even Lightning waits at red lights?” asked An'an. “Of course,” Mom said. “That bolt is a picture, not permission to go first.” An'an made her finger wait too.

The light turned green. Uncle Chen checked the crossing and moved off gently, leaving extra space on the wet road. An'an discovered that slower could be better.

Water covered the little street ahead, hiding its depth. Uncle Chen did not drive in. He parked where it was allowed and contacted dispatch about another open route.

“Are we lost?” An'an hugged her backpack. Mom pointed to the clock tower. “A detour isn't getting lost. We know where we're going and we're avoiding danger.”

The new route passed a bakery. Its warm window looked like toast, and people sheltered beneath the awning. “A red umbrella, a blue one, and a flowery one!” counted An'an.

At the crossing, an older man was walking slowly across. Lightning Taxi stopped to wait. An'an whispered to the little bolt, “This time, it isn't a race.”

Home at last! Uncle Chen parked in a safe drop-off bay. Mom checked around them, then helped An'an out on the sidewalk side, away from the big puddle.

“Backpack, umbrella, library books—all here!” Mom and An'an checked their things and thanked Uncle Chen. Rain had washed the yellow bolt bright on the closed green door.

At home, An'an built a block crossing and stopped a green toy taxi at a red disc. “What's the first rule of our rainy-day mission?” she asked Mom.

“Bring everyone safely home,” Mom said. The rain had stopped. An'an parked the toy gently. “Green Lightning didn't come first, but it completed the best mission.”

A reliable ride puts safety before rushing.
