Beneath the pine, I ask the young student, Who says, ‘My teacher has gone to gather herbs.’ ‘He is somewhere here in these mountains, But the clouds are deep—I do not know where.’

Beneath the pine, I ask the young student, Who says, ‘My teacher has gone to gather herbs.’ ‘He is somewhere here in these mountains, But the clouds are deep—I do not know where.’

Beneath the pine, I ask the young student. The poet reaches the old tree and asks the child beside the hut.

Who says, ‘My teacher has gone to gather herbs.’ The child explains that the teacher took a basket into the mountains.

‘He is somewhere here in these mountains.’ The teacher has not gone beyond the mountain before them.

‘But the clouds are deep—I do not know where.’ Layer after layer of white cloud hides the teacher's exact path.

The poet hears the answer and sees pine, path, and deep cloud. The person he missed seems hidden inside the whole mountain.

Not finding someone leaves room to imagine. The mountain's open spaces make the search quiet and mysterious.

Beneath the pine, I ask the young student, Who says, ‘My teacher has gone to gather herbs.’ ‘He is somewhere here in these mountains, But the clouds are deep—I do not know where.’ Now read it softly once more.

A simple question and answer carries our gaze from beneath a pine into cloud-filled mountains; the missing teacher makes the landscape feel even deeper.
